Compass and sundial are two completely different instruments and they serve completely different purposes.
A compass is an instrument used for navigation and consists of a free-floating magnetized needle that, when held horizontally still, aligns with the Earth's magnetic field so that it points roughly north.
A sundial is an instrument designed for a specific location on Earth and permanently mounted there so that the shadow of one of its parts indicates the hour of the day. Of course, this only works during the day and when the sun is creating a shadow.
Brass Compass Sundial -CRAFT FOCUS – Sundial Compass - Crazy Crow Trading Post Combining the functions of a sundial and a compass
A sundial compass is a combination of these two instruments and consists of a portable sundial that is attached to a compass by a hinge. If the ground is not level, you will need to use some adjustable feet to level the instrument. The goblin is hinged and needs to be placed in the upward position to lock into place. There should be something like a protractor on the right side of the goblin, which is on a hinge and also needs to be flipped up. A protractor is used to set the sundial to the correct angle of latitude, while a compass is used to find true north based on the declination of magnetic north for that area.
Once your sundial compass is leveled, set to the correct latitude and true north, the gnome will cast a shadow on the face of the sundial. When used in the southern hemisphere, the same procedure is followed, but true south must be found instead of true north.
When the instrument is not in use, the needle brake should be set to ensure that the needle bearing is not damaged during transport. To do this, simply slide the lever on the side of the compass over to lock the needle in place. Then, fold the sundial and gnome up for storage.
Allowing for orientation in a sundial compass "reading"
However, the time shown on the sundial may not match the time on your clock or watch. This is because the time shown on the sundial is actually "local apparent time" because the time is based on the position of the sun in the center of the time zone. If you are on the east side of the time zone, the sundial will be ahead, and if you are on the west side, the sundial will be behind.
